The firmament: A hypothesis
Johnson, GL. 1987.  CRSQ 24(1):38-42. CELD ID 7429

Abstract
We see that the second day of creation was used to establish something called 'firmament' in the King James Version, 'expanse' in the New American Standard Bible and the New International Version, 'dome' in the Today's English Version, and 'vault' in the Jerusalem Bible and the New English Bible. The word 'expanse' implies a vast open area such as the present atmosphere. The other words imply something hard or firm, like the celestial vault of ancient mythology. The Hebrew word can mean either concept.
