The Days of Creation: A Semantic Approach
Stambaugh, J. 1991.  CENTJ 5(1):70-78. CELD ID 4776

Abstract
The length of time represented by the 'days' of creation in Genesis has been a controversial subject among evangelicals for at least 150 years. During this time, 'eisegesis has been as common as exegesis.' Some have examined the history of the interpretation of the 'days' of Genesis 1; others have studied the variety of definitions for the Hebrew word yom, translated 'day'. To avoid the trap of eisegesis, this study will present a semantic analysis of the word yom in the Old Testament. However, before discussing the meaning of any single word, it is wise to understand the purpose behind the words which are used in the Bible, and specifically in Genesis 1.
