Abstract
In June, the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of Jack Phillips, the now-famous Colorado baker who declined on religious grounds to make a customized cake to celebrate a same-sex couple's "wedding." Phillips offered to sell the couple any other item in his shop, including an already prepared wedding cake. In an opinion article in USA Today, Phillips wrote, "What a cake celebrating this event would communicate was a message that contridicts my deepest religious convictions, and as an artist, that's not just something I'm able to do, so I politely declined." Even though they could have gone to any other bakery in Colorado, Charlie Craig and David Mullins instead filed a complaint with Colorado's Civil Rights Commission.
