Abstract
As Explorer I, the United States' first successful Earth-orbiting satellite was in the planning stages, physicist James Van Allen made an impassioned plea for the satellite to carry a Geiger counter to detect charged particles. The rest of course is history. Because of the Geiger counter, vast belts of charged particles were discovered in 1958.
