JC 20(1):109-115. CELD ID 18677Abstract Sometime in 1774 William Cockburn became the third son born to Sir James Cockburn of Scotland. He achieved the distinction of twelfth wrangler in mathematics at St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1795 and was a Fellow of the university from 1796 to 1806, obtaining an M.A. in 1798. In 1823 he served as Christian Advocate to Cambridge University, a task of defending the Christian faith among the students.
