| Book review: Thomas Henry Huxley: The Evolution of a Scientist by Sherrie L. Lyons | Drake, JM. 2000.
PSCF 52(3):205-206. CELD ID 14913Abstract Lyons’s biography of T. H. Huxley, self-designated "Darwin’s Bulldog," substantially contributes to the growing body of historical literature portraying the intellectual milieu during the advent of Darwinian evolution. Lyons pursues her subject topically, describing and evaluating Huxley’s approach to science and culture: rigorous empiricism. She does not develop the social context for the development of Darwinian evolution; this has been done elsewhere. Lyons’s task is to elaborate the role of one man, Huxley, and his acceptance and endorsement of Darwin’s hypothesis. She performs this task well.
