Just who was neanderthal man?

Abstract
Neanderthal Man (often written as Neadertal Man now) has been in the news quite a bit lately. Traditionally he has been seen as a link on the tree from ape-men to modern man (Homo sapiens). Increasingly it was recognised that he was not very different from us and became recognised as a branch from H. sapiens. Recently studies from recovered DNA have upset the picture and he has been relegated to an extinct branch evolved from a common ancestor with ourselves. What can we say about this from a biblical viewpoint?
